HYDERABAD, JULY 15. Eleven MLAs, including one belonging to the Samajwadi Party and two others elected on the Janata Party ticket from Andhra Pradesh in the last elections, have been accorded associate member status by the Congress high command.

This was conveyed to them at a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party, which was also attended by some independents, on Thursday. The Samajwadi Party MLA from Gadwal, D.K. Aruna, and the Janata Party MLAs -- K. Ramulu of Metpalli and Shashidhar Reddy of Medak -- are among the new associate members of the party. All of the three had been denied the Congress ticket in the last elections and chose the politically circuitous route to gain the associate status.

However, the status of the SP and JP MLAs does not get altered in the Assembly and they continue to remain what they are - MLAs of their respective parties.

The CLP meet chaired by Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy also announced the names of its executive. The deputy leaders are: P. Sambasiva Raju, C. Venkat Rao and S. Chandra Sekhar while M. Gopalakrishna is its treasurer. H. Appayya Dora, S. Ganga Ram, E. Pratap Reddy and Konda Surekha are secretaries.

The executive members are: K. Murali Mohan, K. Ravi Babu, Gade Venkat Reddy, R. Chenga Reddy, M. Venkata Ramana Rao, G. Ravi Kumar, K.Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, P. Veeraiah, K. Sujatha Reddy, H. M. Ahamadulla, B. Saraiah, Ch. Narsi Reddy, M. Mukesh, V. Sunitha Laxma Reddy, V. Vasanth Kumar, A. Indrakaran Reddy, S. Sailajanath, Ch. Vamshi Krishna, P. Satyanarayana, Jalagam Venkat Rao, Nadendla Manohar and V. Purushottam Reddy.

The meeting directed the MLAs to actively associate themselves with the PCC membership drive as the closing date for the task is July 30.

The PCC president, D. Srinivas, could not attend the CLP meet due to indisposition.

The meeting also heard a demand for filling of nominated posts to market, library and endowment committees at the earliest.

Talking to reporters later, Mr. Puli Veeranna and other independent MLAs said they had attended the CLP meeting at the invitation of the PCC president whom they met on Wednesday night and the Chief Minister.

Congress rebel's presence may boost Minister's chances

By S. Venugopal

MAHABUBNAGAR, APRIL 14. The Law Minister, P. Chandrasekhar, who is seeking re-election from the Mahabubnagar Assembly constituency for the sixth time, is facing his old rival, Puli Veeranna, this time as a Congress rebel, and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti candidate, M. Srinivasulu.

Mahabubnagar was considered a Congress bastion until the TDP arrived on the political scene in 1983. Eversince, the TDP has won five out of the six elections held so far and the Congress could get the better of the TDP only in the 1989 polls.

As part of the seat-sharing agreement between the Congress and the TRS, the Mahabubnagar Assembly segment was allotted to the latter, much to the chagrin of Mr. Puli Veeranna, a former Congress Minister. Mr. Srinivasulu was a Government employee in the Housing Department till he received his `B' form from the TRS and is a novice to politics.

Mr. Chandrasekhar started his political career with the TDP and made his maiden entry into the Assembly winning the Mahabubnagar Assembly seat in the 1983 elections by defeating the Congress candidate, Mohd. Shukur. He retained the seat in the 1985 elections by trouncing the Congress nominee, G. Sahadev Yadav. However, Mr. Chandrasekhar missed a hat-trick in the 1989 polls, and tasted defeat at the hands of Mr. Puli Veeranna. But in the subsequent elections in 1994, he avenged his defeat and went on to retain the seat in the 1999 elections also by defeating Mr. Veeranna. The latter's defeat was attributed to the presence of the Congress rebel candidate, G. Sahadev Yadav. Mr. Chandrasekhar secured 51,065 votes while Mr. Veeranna bagged 44,377 votes and Mr.Yadav managed to get 13,719 votes. Mr. Chandrasekhar won the seat with a margin of 6,688 votes and had Mr. Yadav not been in the field, the result might have gone against the TDP.

Incidentally, all the three main contenders - Mr. Chandrasekhar, Mr. Srinivasulu and Mr. Puli Veeranna -- belong to the backward classes. Mr. Chandrasekhar is confident of his victory and with Mr. Veeranna in the fray as a Congress rebel, the campaign managers of the Minister are certain that the split in the Congress vote bank would ensure the victory of their leader.

Mr. Veeranna still claims that he is a Congressman and his publicity material such as banners, hand bills are in three colours resembling that of the Congress. Congress leaders at the village level are extending total support to Mr. Veeranna while party leaders campaigning for the Congress Lok Sabha candidate, Vittal Rao, are doing their bit for Mr. Veeranna. Added to this, the Samajwadi Party candidate, Bekkari Srinivas Reddy, is openly canvassing for Mr. Veeranna.

Death blow to Congress in Mahabubnagar

By Our Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR, MARCH 30. The electoral alliance between the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi has virtually dealt a death- blow to the Congress in Mahabubnagar district.

Led by the DCC president, S. Jagadeeshwar Reddy, almost all top leaders of the district -- the APCC general secretary, Mallu Ravi, the former Minister, D. K. Samarasimha Reddy, the APCC joint secretary, D. K. Aruna, her husband and former MLA, D. K. Bharatsimha Reddy, the former Minister Puli Veeranna, and the Backward Cell chief of the DCC, D. Sahadev Yadav, have decided to bid goodbye to the Congress and contest as Samajwadi Party candidates.

It is learnt that some of the top leaders met at the residence of Mr. Jagadeeshwar Reddy and took a firm decision on deserting the party.

The Congress leaders have taken this extreme step to "teach a lesson" to the party high command for surrendering six Assembly seats out of 13 and one Lok Sabha seat (Nagarkurnool) out of two in the district to the TRS as part of the seat-sharing arrangement.

Incidentally, Mr. Bharatsimha Redy, Ms. Aruna and the Wanaparthy ex-MLA of the Congress, Chinna Reddy, have in the past few days been trying to mediate with the TRS chief, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, not to insist on so many seats in Mahabubnagar district. They were particular that the Congress should field its candidate from Gadwal.

The DK brothers, who have been at loggerheads in the past six years, are said to have come to an understanding. According to their understanding, Mr. Samarasimha Reddy will contest from the Mahabubnagar Lok Sabha constituency as SP candidate while Ms. Aruna will file nomination on behalf of the same party for the Gadwal Assembly seat.

Separately, Congress workers of Jadcherla at a meeting today decided to field Mr. Mallu Ravi from the Jadcherla Assembly constituency. Mr. Jagadeeshwar Reddy, Mr. Puli Veeranna and Mr. Sahadev Yadav would also file their nominations on Wednesday for the Mahabubnagar Assembly seat but only one of them will finally remain in the fray.

The Congress member of the dissolved Assembly from Kollapur, Jupalli Krishna Rao, who has resigned from the party after being denied party ticket, will also contest as rebel.

The TRS district vice-president, B Srinivas Reddy, has decided to file nomination as an independent candidate protesting against the party high command's decision to deny him ticket.
